The second week of May was Food Allergy Awareness week throughout the country, and here in Westford that fact provided a gift to the J.V. Fletcher Library.

In honor of the week, several parents donated a series of children’s books about food allergy to the library as part of an ongoing effort to raise awareness on the issue.

The group of parents, informally known as the Westford Food Allergy Network, arose as families in town banded together to deal with the food allergy-related issues ranging from sharing best practices to spreading the word about allergies to the general public.

Their donation to the library was the latest in a series of actions ranging from raising $5,000 for food allergy awareness to getting the Apple Blossom Parade to ban peanut products after an infant was impacted by a Reese’s cup last year.

“People are aware allergies exist, but if you don’t live it every day, it’s hard to know how to manage it,” said Katrina Avila Munichello, one of the organizers of the book donation. “There’s always a good opportunity to remind people.”
