Angus Jennings announced this week that he has accepted the challenge laid out to other Lieutenant Governor candidates by Democratic nominee Steve Kerrigan.
Jennings, Westford’s former director of land use planning, issued a counter-challenge to schedule the first two debates immediately, proposing that the first debate focus on economic development and the second on patronage in state government.
“I share Steve’s commitment to a vigorous democracy and accept his challenge of at least six debates. It’s unclear whether the other Lt. Governor candidates have accepted Steve’s challenge, but I’m calling on Steve and any of the candidates who are willing to debate to begin scheduling these events immediately. I am reaching out to local and regional Chambers of Commerce and other possible debate hosts and would welcome Steve, and any of the LG candidates, to join me in that task.”
The first debate currently scheduled in the race for Governor and Lieutenant Governor is on Oct. 14 in Fitchburg, although more debates may be scheduled throughout the state before then.
Jennings also announced this week the launching of his own website specifically for the Lieutenant Governor’s race, spinning off from the website of his running mate, United Independent Party candidate Evan Falchuk.
The latest poll from WBUR has the pair currently running at 2%, below the 3% needed for the United Independent Party to gain major party ballot access in 2016.
However, Jennings is confident that his ticket can achieve that threshold given the conversations he’s been having with voters across the state.
‘There’s really a movement of people in Massachusetts who are sick of the two party system,” said Jennings. “both on substance as well as the fact that issues are often boiled down and oversimplified in artificial terminology.”
