The following are Jr. Grey Ghost Recaps from the weekend of Sept. 7, 2014. They were submitted by Tom Kane
Westford B Team 12 vs Chelmsford 0
The Westford Junior Ghosts B Team made quite an impression on Sunday at Chelmsford. Adam Ohanian set the tone when he made the first major tackle against Chelmsford. Nick Antes quickly followed suit with a fumble recovery in the first quarter. Steven Tubianosa ended the first quarter with a touchdown to push the Jr. Ghosts ahead 6-0. Luke Stocker came in with a massive block to create the opportunity for a second touchdown by Nick Antes to end the second quarter with 12-0 lead.
The third and fourth quarters were jam packed with hits made by Jake Morash and Kenny Tashjy. Jake Gross pounded the ball into Chelmsford territory with some impressive gains.
It was an overall great effort by the B team and their cheering squad who kept up the excitement with a phenomenal performance of their own.
Westford C Team 22 vs Chelmsford 0
The Jr. Ghost C Team opened the 2014 season with a convincing win at Chelmsford Sunday. Brian Scannell was the story on offense scoring all three Ghost touchdowns. He ran two, and caught a pass from Nathaniel Damiani for a long touchdown reception. Justin Lokere added two extra-point kicks worth two points each. Pete Bonenfant, Ryan Pillion and Mason Materazzo provided some serious push up front on the offensive line to clear the way for the Westford backs. Preserving the shut out for the Ghosts, Robbie Raboin and Mike Morash were relentless with their pressure in the Chelmsford backfield. Devin Crogan and Sean Brown played great pass coverage as well. The Ghosts next play this Sunday at Westford Academy, hosting the Brookline-Jamaica Plain Jr. Patriots.
Westford D Team 14 vs. Chelmsford 0
Westford’s D-Team took Chelmsford by storm for their first game of what should be a very exciting season.
Captains Cole Stickel, Ethan Ewing and Elliot Bradley brought Westford Chelmsford’s home field and shut down their opponent at every opportunity.
First half action from Westford’s offense resulted in two great touchdowns to bring the halftime score to 14-0. Ryan Blagg ran for 15 yards to score the first touchdown with Luke Reynolds plowed through Chelmsford for the extra point. Later in the half, blocking by Michael Picanso’s offensive line helped Ethan Ewing run up the middle through a herd of Chelmsford defenders to pick up a first down near the goal line. QB Luke Reynolds ran down the sideline to the end zone and Ewing earned Westford another extra point on the play.
The second half was all about the defense. Luke Fremault dominated the Westford defense with the help of Conner Moncreaf, Joey Bella, and Nick Manzi. Ethan Ewing made an amazing interception late in the second half to regain possession and Westford was able to hold onto the ball until the final whistle. The Westford D-Team has home field advantage against Brookline next Sunday at 9:30 a.m.
Westford E Team 13 vs Chelmsford 13
The Westford Mitey Mites squad battled the Chelmsford Cougars to a hard-fought 13-13 draw, kicking off a picture-perfect morning for Pop Warner football.
The teams traded scores in an exciting back-and-forth game that was ended by a time restriction to prevent the subsequent games from starting late.
Just before the final whistle, Chelmsford scored but the Westford defense smothered the extra-point attempt. Those final two plays reflected the give and take of much of the game. Aside from a few bursts, Westford was able to blunt the potent Chelmsford running attack with strong defensive line play anchored by Owen Crann, Aiden Murphy and a swarming, gap-filling crew of Jr. Ghosts.
Westford’s first score came during a memorable second-quarter drive that demonstrated the team’s ability to recover from self-inflicted adversity. After several penalties, Westford found itself with a first and 30 but hammered down the field with a series of effective runs, capped by Tommy Galvin’s gritty fourth-down conversion that set up the eventual score.
Throughout the second half, Bobby MacCormack, Matthew Morash and Andrew Stodden repeatedly punched through the Chelmsford line to propel Westford’s offensive attack.
At halftime, the Westford cheerleaders showed the results of their long weeks of practice with an energetic routine that wowed the crowd.
