From Nabnasset to Forge Village, here are your Five Things for Oct. 9, 2014 in Westford.
#1. The Westford Public School Department is looking… for a seasonal, part-time instructor for the Living Lab, a dedicated science lab located at the Norman E. Day School. This instructor will work with students from kindergarten to grade five, teaching science and engineering lessons that will be provided. Experience working with elementary school students and a background in science is preferable. The Living Lab runs for six weeks in the fall and six weeks in the spring. There will be an additional week at Fifth Grade Environmental Camp in early June. #2. The third annual Friends of Nashoba Valley Technical High School 5K Road Race…. is Saturday, Oct. 18, at 11:30 a.m., with a fun run at 11. Registration starts at 9:30 a.m., at the school, 100 Littleton Road (Route 110), Westford.
The entry fees before Oct. 12 are $25 for adults, $15 for students under 19, and $10 for runners over 65. After Oct. 12, the fees are $35 for adults, $20 for students under 19, and $15 for runners over 65. The fun run is free for all runners. Pre-entrants receive a free T-shirt. #3. Speaking of Nashoba Tech… Members of the Horticulture Club at Nashoba Valley Technical High School have transformed two small areas at the entrance to the school’s restaurant, The Elegant Chef, into an expanded herb garden.
In addition to serving as an entryway to the restaurant, hair and nail salon, Cosmo Cuts, and Viking Village Mall, the herb garden serves as a cutting garden for the Culinary Arts program for fresh herbs, vegetables and flowers for bouquets.
Students who designed, built and planted the herb garden include juniors Aislin Boyden (Townsend), Erica Bradford (Littleton), Travis Conley (Lowell), Sean Defreitas (Chelmsford), Shelby Dudley (Townsend), Markus Jalbert (Chelmsford) and Tyra Mitchell (Shirley).
The Horticulture Club’s advisers are Andrea Knowles and Carley Engle.
#4. J.V. Fletcher Lego Club meets… Saturday, Oct. 11 from 2 to 3 p.m..Kids ages 6 and up are invited to make Lego creations at the library using the library Legos. Parents and caregivers need to stay and play too. All creations will stay on display in the Children’s Room through the month. Free. No registration required.
#5. Please be advised that Governor Deval L. Patrick…. has ordered that the United States flag and the Commonwealth flag be lowered to half-staff at all state buildings from sunrise until sunset on Thursday, October 9, 2014, in honor of Technical Sergeant Patrick A. Rud, 32, Massachusetts Air National Guard 104th Fighter Wing, of Holyoke, who died on October 3, 2014.
This gubernatorial order applies to the main or administration building of each public institution of the Commonwealth, e.g. town and city halls, other state-owned or state-controlled buildings and all state military installations
