The Town of Westford’s Veterans’ Services Department announced on Monday morning that flags will remain at half-staff in honor of former U.S. Senator Edward W. Brooke.

Brooke passed away on Jan. 3 and represented Massachusetts in the U.S. Senate from 1966 to 1979.

He was the last Republican U.S. Senator from Massachusetts until Scott Brown’s election and he was the first popularly elected African-American U.S. Senator.

Flags will remain at half-staff until his interment, which was delayed due to a scheduling issue at Arlington National Cemetery.
