Concerned Parents Provide Feedback On Full-Day Kindergarten

Monday’s School Committee meeting began a string of parents providing a range of concerns related to expanding or not expanding full-day kindergarten in Westford.

There were also updates from the Superintendent and School Committee members on other issues.

A Final Overview Of The Proposed School Budget

Described as a “tip of the iceberg,” one last look at the proposed school budget for FY’ 2016 was given, although it was overshadowed by discussion about kindergarten.

Kindergarten Committee Presents Findings

There was universal praise for the 100 page report offered by the Full-Day Kindergarten Citizens Advisory Committee.

That report was summarized, ultimately indicating that any benefits from full-day kindergarten were found to be nominal after children reached higher grade levels.

However, the report also noted that the data was imperfect.

Variety Of Kindergarten Issues Discussed

After the report was presented, it was dissected and ideas were shared ranging from a potential pilot program to whether or not parents want options on publicly offered kindergarten programs.

Kindergarten Teachers Share Insights

The evening concluded with feedback from two current kindergarten teachers, reinforcing a theme throughout the evening: the view that Westford’s kindergarteners are facing an overstuffed curriculum.
