Westford’s Marrkand Plays Role In NCAA Swimming Championships

Westford Academy Alumnus Jennifer Marrkand was a force in the pool for the Grey Ghosts and she made her mark at the 2015 NCAA Division 1 Swimming and Diving Championships last weekend.

Now a freshman at the University of Virginia, Marrkand participated in four events, highlighted by a 51.61 performance in the butterfly portion of the 400 Yard Medley Relay preliminaries.

Her performance there helped Virginia finish first in the preliminaries with a time of 3:28.27, just over a second more than the NCAA record.

Virginia was fifth overall with 229 points, falling behind Texas A&M, Stanford, Georgia and California.

Marrkand also finished 30th in the preliminaries of the Women’s 100 Yard Butterfly, 16th in the finals of the Women’s 200 Yard Backstroke, and 24th in the preliminaries of the Women’s 200 Yard Butterfly.

She has now qualified for the 2016 Olympic Trials in Omaha, Nebraska.

While at Westford Acaedemy, Marrkand won three state chamopionships, was a three-time Dual County League All-Star and was on the honor roll for three years.
