Nashoba Girls U10

In their season opener, the Nashoba Girls U10 team lost a tight game, 4-3, to Chelmsford.  The girls played a strong first period, with the offensive line of Fiona Daly, Isabelle Field and Alice Homer demonstrating great skating and passing skills.  After an aggressive scramble for the puck in the bottom corner, Homer scored the first goal for Nashoba on the assist from defensive player Kendall Moran.  Goalie Mackenzie Donoghue was well protected by defensive pairs Moran with Zoe Musante, and Jocelyn Silva with Kelly Paquet.  Moran and Silva also showed strong skating skills, each digging deep into the corners and skating up the ice to either pass or shoot on net.  Daly led the scoring with 2 goals in the second period, the first on a set of beautiful passes by Homer and Moran, and the second as she took the puck up the left side unassisted to tie the score at 3-3.  The Grizzlies saw a strong offensive showing by forwards Callie Haggan, Emily Lux and Emma Boylen.  Lux showed talent on the face-offs, and each of the girls skated hard and worked to clear the puck up the sides.  With 30 seconds left in the second period, Chelmsford unleashed a full assault on the net with Donoghue coming up with a spectacular save.  But, the onslaught proved to be too much, and Chelmsford scored with 1 second left in the period.  Down 4-3 at the start of the third, the girls never gave up and skated with heart until the last second of play.  Daly had a couple more solid shots on net and Field stayed strong and aggressive.  Musante continued to play tough defense with a wide open net, and stopped what looked like another sure goal.  With 2 minutes left to play, Silva’s skating was on fire as she charged down the ice on a breakaway.  Knocked down, she popped back up and continued skating hard, and with .1 second left on the clock she took the final shot of the game, just missing.  The Grizzlies next face off is against the Lady Crusaders on Sunday at 8:00 a.m. at Nashoba Olympia in Boxboro.
