The J.V. Fletcher Library already provides a wide array of resources for Westford. But one local Eagle Scout candidate wants to add another resource at the library to help area residents.

Over the past several months, Will O’Neal of Troop 159 has begun a “seed library” where local residents can borrow seeds to use in their gardens.

The library also gives charitable gardeners a chance to lend seeds to help their neighbors as well.

While he expects the project to meet comparable seed libraries in Groton and Concord, he got the idea for the project from a magazine he read several years ago.

As he was thinking about what to do for his Eagle Scout project, O’Neal thought back to the magazine and thought the same thing could be done here in Westford.

“My goal first is to have more local variety, there are so few vegetables produced by large agricultural businesses that a plant disease could impact food sources. Having local variety is very important to that,” he said. “(Also) local gardeners will have more resources to get more people interested in gardening.”

Almost 500 seeds have been donated by Weston Nurseries, although O’Neal is continuing to look for seed donations at the library from local residents.

With the initial work completed by O’Neal, the Westford Agricultural Commission will be in charge of its upkeep moving forward.
