Resident Joana Donaher made a guest appearance at the Agricultural Commission meeting on Feb. 5 to inquire about installing an apiary at the Community Gardens.

Agricultural Commissioner and beekeeper Peter Cox said the commission’s revolving account holding approximately $8,000, could fund the construction of a solar-powered battery operated fence to keep children from entering the area and animals away from the bees. The site would be on a parcel next to but removed from the gardens, he said.
The plan would be for any interested resident to have a hive, Cox said.
Donaher, who has been beekeeping on and off for about six years, said she’ll explore the idea further and bring her findings to the next Agricultural Commission meeting.
UPDATE: The phrase “and animals away from the bees” was added to the second paragraph on Feb. 8.
