A day designed to celebrate life brought 285 recreational athletes to the 4-H Fairgrounds in Westford on July 15.
The Ride for Liv/Run for Liv honors the memory of Olivia “Liv” Marchand who died in a tragic incident of domestic violence. (Continue below).
The riders and runners who attended raised money for the Live for Liv Foundation so that victims of domestic violence and their children could be supported at a Lowell shelter. The money will also fund a scholarship for a Westford Academy graduating senior and it will go toward providing transitional housing for a victim of domestic violence in need of a safe home.
All tolled, the Ride for Liv/Run for Liv raised almost $36K, according to organizers, with almost $17K coming from local sponsorships and pending sponsorships.
In February 2010, Olivia was a Westford Academy senior bound for the University of Vermont. Police say her father, Brian Marchand shot and killed her, critically wounded her mother Jody Marchand, and then turned the gun on himself succumbing to his injury.
Jody survived her wounds and went on to found the Live for Liv foundation.
