State Rep. James Arciero announced on July 19 that the final version of the Fiscal Year 2019 State Budget, as passed by both the House and Senate, contained $100K in funding for a new playground and other improvements at Forge Beach.

“I am very pleased that we were able to secure $100,000 in funding for the construction and installation of a new playground at the town beach at Forge Pond. Over the years, the town beach has become an important recreational destination for the families of Westford, and especially for the residents of Forge Village and Graniteville.  In addition, Forge pond serves as the training location for the Westford Academy students who participate in crew,” said Arciero.

The state Legislator, who is the father of a young child and a Forge Village resident, said he had noticed a year ago the playground equipment was becoming unsafe for children.

“Several months ago, the entire playground was removed due to the safety concerns of the town.  I worked with the Forge Village Improvement Association and the Westford Parks & Recreation Department in determining the best course of action going forward to provide for a new playground,” he said.

Arciero said his amendment to the state budget — a first step in securing funds — was accepted.

The funding is dedicated to the construction and installation of a new playground, but can also be used for other improvements at Forge Beach depending on the final cost of the new playground. The recreational facility is located just off of Pleasant Street.

“There are other needs at Westford’s town beach, which the Westford Parks and Recreation Department is looking to address under their Master Plan. I look forward to seeing the results of this critical funding and the positive impact it will have for the families who utilize this important recreational resource,” Arciero said.

It’s now up to Gov. Charlie Baker to approve the funding when he reviews and signs the state budget within the next 10 days.
