Westford’s Agricultural Commissioners began strategizing, Aug. 6, over how to bring back the town’s Farmers Market. The weekly event no longer brings shoppers and farmers together for the current growing season — the result of an April 24 statement issued by the Board of Directors of Sustainable Westford announcing the market’s cancellation.

Residents registered disappointment on Facebook, and Selectman Elizabeth Almeida, who is the liaison to the Agricultural Commission, took up the effort to revive it. In a statement the Sustainable Westford board said members had found it difficult to attract a large enough customer base to keep it viable. The market met on Tuesday afternoons on the town Common. Agricultural commissioners will be researching markets in other towns, vendors and shoppers to see, among other things, a different day would be preferable.

Almeida said once the commissioners complete their data gathering there will be three sets of data: feedback from consumers, farmers, and market managers.

“My hope is that when we get information from these three groups we’ll see some common threads,” she said. “Like ‘everyone is saying a certain day of the week is best, or a certain mix of products and vendors is best,’ and we’ll use that information then to make a recommendation to the selectmen.”
