Knitting Group: Mon., Sept 10 at 3 p.m. An informal knitting group will be meeting again in the Mary Atwood Room on the second Monday of every month from 3 to 5 p.m. and the fourth Monday of every month from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. This is a drop-in program that is open to all ages. Story Time and Book Club Online Registration: Monday, Sept. 10 at 6:30 p.m. Book clubs are open to Westford residents and non-resident Friends of the J.V. Fletcher Library. Book clubs are for grades kindergarten through grade 5 and meet once a month from 4 to 4:45 p.m. The Mini Masters Art Book Club is for children in grades 3, 4, and 5 and meets one Thursday afternoon a month. The Non-Fiction Book Club is for kids in grades 3 and 4 and meets once a month on Monday afternoon. Although residents can register in person, online registration for these popular programs starts Monday evening at 6:30 p.m.
English Conversation Circle: Tuesday, Sept. 11 at 10:30 a.m. The Conversation Circle will resume weekly meetings on Sept. 11 from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. in the Mary Atwood Room. Attendees can practice their English conversation skills and meet new friends in a relaxed and friendly environment led by Carol Morse. FREE. Preschool Concert with Miss Emily: Wednesday, Sept. 13 at 11:30 a.m. Parents’ Choice Award winner Emily Hall brings her catchy and upbeat music for a special back to school concert. Attendees can bring a blanket and a picnic lunch and enjoy the fun on the back lawn. This free, drop-in program is for all ages. If it rains, the show will be in the Meeting Room.
Know the 10 Signs of Dementia: Thursday, Sept. 13 at 7 p.m. If someone is experiencing memory loss or behavioral changes, it’s time to learn the facts. Early detection of Alzheimer’s disease gives one the chance to begin drug therapy, enroll in clinical studies and plan for the future. This interactive workshop, including video footage will be run by Lisa Sobhian of the Alzheimer’s Association. FREE!  J.V. Fletcher Adult Book Discussion Group: Thursday, Sept. 13 at 7:30 p.m. The Bright Hour by Nina Riggs will be discovered.  Copies of the current reading selection are available for check-out at the Main Desk.  New members are always welcome.  No registration required.
Adventures in Seed Saving: Saturday, Sept. 15 at 10:30 a.m. Saving seeds is fun and inexpensive, but beware, it can also be addictive. Gardener and teacher Judith Taylor will teach the importance of saving seeds, and offer tips for saving and storing seeds successfully. Many types and sizes of seeds will be included, and some will be available for attendees to save and take home. FREE!  Lego® Club: Sat., Sept. 15 from 2 to 3 p.m. An hour of brick fever fun will be offered as kids imagine, build, and create. They will meet other Lego® enthusiast. The library will supply the Legos® and display space. All creations will be displayed in the library. Free, drop-in for ages 5 and up with a parent or caregiver.
Epigenetics: Thursday, Sept. 27 at 7 p.m. DNA tells us the color of our eyes, how tall we are, and even if we like broccoli. But does your DNA say everything about you? If one identical twin becomes an astronaut and the other a ballerina, does their biology change? Are they still identical? Epigenetics is the study of the various different switches that can turn parts of DNA on and off. How genetic code is read can cause very real differences in life. This talk will discuss how epigenetics works, how it is researched, and how it is found in everyday life. It will also touch on topics such as gene editing and biohacking. Residents can register online or in the Information Services Department.
Advanced Snap Circuits and Takeaparts: Friday, Sept. 28 from 3:30 – 4:30 p.m. There have five exciting Snap Circuits kits to play with: RC Cars, Light, Motion, Arcade, and 3D Illumination. Preregister online. This free program is for children in grades 3 to 5.
Ukulele Strum Along: Saturday, Sept. 29 from 2 to 3 p.m. Participants will learn to play by playing. Focusing on two and three chord songs, this program is for the beginner ukulele player who wants to practice and play music with others. Singing is encouraged. Ukuleles available to borrow, songs projected onto a screen so no music stands or books necessary. This program is open to adults and teens. Residents can register online or in the Information Services Department to borrow a ukulele, or just drop in with your own.
