Over the past decade, Westford resident Nancy Cook, and the local suicide prevention group she captains, Team Forever Young, has participated in dozens of Out of the Darkness Walks. These 16 – 18 mile dusk until dawn journeys not only raise money for the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention but they also cast a light on the growing number of suicides in this country and remember those who have taken their own lives.

On Saturday, Feb. 9, Team Forever Young, and its presenting sponsor, the Lowell Sun Charities, held its first annual Team Forever Young Celebration Gala, at the UMass Lowell Inn and Conference Center, where more than 350 people attended, raising $35,000 through tickets sales, silent actions, raffles, and sponsors.

“We started 10 years ago with the loss of Billy Duggan, a Westford Police Officer and my friend from junior high school,” said Cook. “We started walking to bring awareness to mental health issues and for suicide awareness.”

To date Team Forever Young has raised $500,000 for the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention.
