Westford’s Board of Health members gave residents a green light for trick-or-treating on Halloween, traditionally held on October 31.

Carrying out the board’s directive, Health Director Jeff Stephens sat down with WestfordCAT’s Patty Stocker to offer guidelines.

“Obviously nobody wants to shut a holiday down,” said Stephens. “The reason why the board came up with the reasoning that it was okay to trick-or-treat this year is we felt that traditional trick-or-treating in itself was not a great idea but if we made some modifications to that it might be a little easier.”

Trick-or-treaters are asked to use hand sanitizer while going door to door and to wear a face mask at all times.

“We’re all going to have to adjust and sacrifice to these things,” Stephens said. “But as far as the risk level for trick-or-treating, I think it can be done fairly safely.”

Stephens also suggested that those who feel unwell or uncomfortable participating should not do so. “Shut your lights off,” he said.

Details on October flu vaccination clinics were also discussed.
