Firefighters rushed to Westford Academy earlier today to wrestle with a one alarm fire inside the high school’s wastewater treatment building. No one was hurt.

Apparently, the fire started inside one room, according to a release issued by Capt. Shawn Girard, and firefighters were able to keep it contained.

Girard stated three engines and one ladder truck arrived at the high school just after 9 a.m. to see smoke escaping from the open overhead door. The fire was brought under control once the sprinkler system kicked in.

The building is located behind the scoreboard on  the Trustees Field, and a considerable distance away from the High School.

Ayer, Groton and Littleton covered Westford while 10 of the town’s firefighters addressed the fire.

In his notice, Girard stated, “It was determined that there was a fire in the heating system that hangs from the ceiling.”

The incident is under investigation by the state Fire Marshal’s office.
