WA girls basketball swept the double-header against rival Billerica last night in the main gym, with the JV toppling the Indians, 60-54, in a thrilling overtime game in the matinee. The varsity Ghosts also won the second feature, 53-41.

Senior guard Kayley Carignan scans the floor during Thursday night’s, 53-41, victory over Billerica.

Buttressed by Carly Davey’s 19 point, 4 assist performance, the varsity team took control early and never relented. Backed by stifling team defense, the Ghosts were effective at moving the ball around on offense, which helped create shot opportunities for Abby (8 points) and Aria (6 points) Chambers.

Ali Mammola, junior guard for WA, guards the inbound against Billerica during Thursday night’s home win, 53-41.
Strong rebounding augmented the balanced attack for the Ghosts, who will run it all again tonight against Wayland at 7 p.m. in the main gym. Please see slide show for a photo array by Carol MacLeod.

An intense, hard-fought overtime win for the Junior Varsity squad got the home crowd riled up ahead of the main event. In the early game, Diya Jayaraman led the team in scoring with 19 points, including 5 three-pointers.

Jayaraman’s sharpshooting–along with Abby Baker’s 14 points and Willeny Alvarado’s 8 points and 3 steals–helped the Ghosts, who led at halftime 19-16. The second half is when both teams drained bucket after bucket, highlighted by Nidisha Bangaru’s key  free throws late in regulation.

WA’s Erin Keefe played strong defense all night to help the JV Ghosts edge out Billerica, 60-54 in overtime Thursday night.
Billerica then hit one of two freethrows at the end of regulation to send the match into extra time.
Great defense and steady ball-handling by Erin Keefe kept the Ghosts in contention throughout the night. Anya Gesin had 6 points including a clutch basket to put the game away in overtime assisted by Abby Baker.
