The Westford Fire Department (WFD) spotted a suspicious person fleeing from the scene of Friday morning’s brush fire in Westford.
This incident prompted the Westford Police Department (WPD) to begin an investigation into the possibility of arson as a cause of the fires, of which Friday morning’s was the fifth of the season.
The WFD described the suspect as “a teenage male dressed in all black carrying a backpack walking into the woods.”
All five of the fires, which have been occurring since March 31, were spotted in the same wood near the American Legion Baseball Fields, Stony Brook Elementary and East Boston Camps
Due to close proximity of all the fires, the WPD and WFD suspect that arson is a very possible cause. This suspicion grew after the WPD spotted the suspect running away from the site of Friday morning’s fire, which occurred just off of River Street.
The WPD and has been using K9 units to assist them in the investigation of the scene of the fires. They have also asked residents of the area to keep an eye out for anything out of the ordinary, and to keep checking their home surveillance footage to see if there are any further instances of the suspect at the scene.
The investigation is currently ongoing and the WFD and WPD encourage all Westford residents who notice any suspicious activity in the area to call 978-399-2345.
