WESTFORD — Westford Firefighter Derek Smith graduated from the Massachusetts Firefighting Academy’s Career Recruit Training Program.

The 10 week program gives new firefighters from departments across the state the basic skillset needed to begin their fire service careers. Recruits are trained on proper use of protective equipment, search and rescue, operations and basic hazardous materials recognition and mitigation among others.

These skills can provide a foundation for firefighters to build upon as they continue their careers.

“Congratulations Derek! Wishing you and the rest of Class 304 a healthy and rewarding career in the best job in the world,” wrote the Westford Fire Department on social media.
