WESTFORD — The following release was shared with WestfordCAT from the office of Rep. James Arciero for publication and distribution.

The Westford Academy Swim and Dive Team recently visited the Massachusetts State House to be recognized for winning the 2023 Division I Swim Championship in February.

As part of the celebration, State Representative James Arciero hosted the group with a small luncheon, tour of the State House building and House of Representatives Chamber and finished the special day with a visit to the Governor’s office to meet both Governor Maura Healey and Lieutenant Governor Kim Driscoll to discuss the team’s recent achievements.

After an undefeated regular season where the team secured a 14-0 record and the DCL championship.  In sections, they faced opposition and experienced their first lost and fished second in the North Sectionals.  Regrouping under team coaches Quinn Schwab, Oliver Yorke, Vincent Xu and Brian Hall, the team competed against 50 other Division I high schools and in the final round pulled ahead to win the state championship for Westford Academy.

Joining the swimmers were team coaches Harriet Kinnett and Caitlin Klick-McHugh, who credit the team member’s hard work and passion, especially of the captains, in leading the team to the ultimate victory.

“As a former captain of the WA swim team, I know the training and discipline these athletes exhibit in their sport will be valuable throughout their lives and look forward to their future successes both inside and outside of the pool,” said Representative Arciero, who swam for WA in the late 80’s and early 90’s.  “Likewise, Governor Healey and Lt. Governor Driscoll were great athletes in their sport’s careers and the hard work, determination and cooperation with others they learned in athletics certainly accounts for part of their success in public service” he concluded.

In addition to a luncheon of pizza, both the swimmers and their coaches were presented with official citations from the Massachusetts House of Representatives by Representative Arciero to mark their notable achievements both personally and athletically.
