U.S. Rep Lori Trahan recently co-sponsored the We the People Amendment, H.J.R. 54, and has done so in each of her three terms.
The We the People Amendment is the only amendment proposal that
1-establishes that all levels of government shall impose limits on political spending and
2-Constitutional rights are reserved for human beings only,
Rep. Trahan has kept her promise to be a “pragmatic progressive”, representing everyone’s interests. Polls show that a majority of both Democrats and Republicans support meaningful campaign finance reform.
No matter what your political leanings, the Amendment should interest you because no one can pass legislation or expect it to be reinforced while
1- Super PACS, billionaires and corporations can spend unlimited money to buy political campaigns and
2- Corporations’ “Constitutional rights” enable corporations to evade laws passed to protect the public by challenging them in court.
The First Amendment of the Constitution protects our right to free speech. It was never meant to drown out the voices of average citizens by allowing the elite to shout as loud as they can, nor to give corporations the rights of human beings..
Rep. Trahan is to be commended for her consistent support of her constituents’ interests. She serves as an example for all U.S. delegates.
