SUMMARY:Holiday Concert with the Chelmsford Community Band
DESCRIPTION:Get your holiday cheer properly established with the Chelmsford Community Concert Band at their annual holiday concert Sunday\, December 15th\, at 2pm at McCarthy Middle School. This year’s program includes the requisite favorites like Leroy Anderson’s “Sleigh Ride” and the magnificently powerful “Russian Christmas Music” by Alfred Reed\, but there are also multiple pieces that switch things up. The band will be casting familiar songs into a minor key with Lovrien’s “Minor Alterations\,” mashing them up in “Stars and Stripes for Christmas\,” and casting them into a New Orleans jazz feel with “A New Orleans Nutcracker Suite.” This performance also features stunning vocal solos and is not to be missed. \nAdmission to the concert is free\, but donations are always very gratefully accepted so that the band can continue to operate. Suggested donations are $10 for adults and $20 for families. There will also be a fundraising raffle of fun seasonal items and baked goods available for an additional donation. \nHaving recently celebrated its golden anniversary\, the Chelmsford Community Band has a 60-piece concert band and a 20-piece jazz ensemble made of dedicated volunteer musicians with a proud tradition of bringing live musical performances to this community since 1972. They are supported by grants from the Mass Cultural Council\, local towns\, and your donations. DESCRIPTION:Everyone loves Scrimgeour’s annual “Charlie Brown Christmas Jazz Concert\,” but Aidan Scrimgeour is back with his trio and a Duke Ellington tribute concert to ring in the summer! The Mostly Aidans Trio\, featuring Aidan Scrimgeour on piano and Aidan Cafferty on bass. \nAidan Scrimgeour is a musician\, composer and educator from Salem\, MA based in Brooklyn\, NY. After studying piano performance in the Contemporary Improvisation Program at New England Conservatory with Ran Blake and Hankus Netsky\, he graduated with a B.A. in Performance & Representation from Tufts University. In 2020\, Aidan co-founded Brooklyn Porch Music\, an educational and performance collective that emerged from daily ritualistic concerts throughout the early months of the pandemic. This program provides free music lessons\, ensembles and writing workshops for teens in South Brooklyn communities. \nAidan’s musical projects and collaborations incorporate elements of jazz\, country\, and Irish traditional music\, among others. He has performed throughout the country with a variety of groups\, playing piano\, organ and accordion. In the words of Roy Nathanson of the Jazz Passengers\, “the gentle and generous spirit of Aidan’s piano playing leaves you underestimating his remarkable attention to detail and the complexity of his melodic and harmonic ideas. I have been lucky to have played with some amazing players and composers in my 70 years and I can say that Aidan Scrimgeour is a very\, very special musician.”

DESCRIPTION:The Westford Diversity\, Equity & Inclusion Committee invites everyone to Westford’s First Juneteenth Flag Raising & Celebration. Starting at 9:00 am on Wed\, June 19 on Westford Town Common it will be a morning of community celebration and reflection with the goal of raising awareness of Juneteenth and Westford’s history of slavery. As we hoist the traditional Juneteenth flag\, we will be joined by speakers from the community to help us mark Westford’s first formal Juneteenth celebration. It is an opportunity for town leadership to recognize this important holiday and its deeper meaning in American history – history that wasn’t taught to us in schools and may still be a bit lacking. Our awareness today allows us to learn more about ourselves and our own combined history of the U.S. This event marks an important statement about our town’s ongoing commitment to racial equity. \nImmediately after the flag raising – approximately 9:30am – we will head over to the Westford Museum where we will be treated to a spoken historical account of slavery in Westford from Westford Historian Leslie Howard and acknowledgement of a Westford-born\, revolution-area black soldier. These historical accounts will add context and richness of this special inaugural celebration Juneteenth in Westford. Even though Westford was in the Union state of Massachusetts\, it was not exempt from slavery. DESCRIPTION:The Westford Recycling Commission is holding an Electronics & More Collection on June 22\, 2024\, from 9 am to 1 pm at the Westford Highway Garage\, 28 North Street. \nThis is a fee-based collection FOR WESTFORD RESIDENTS ONLY. Westford utilizes the services of Northeast Materials Handling of Ayer\, Massachusetts. CASH OR CHECK ONLY (checks must be made out to “Northeast Material Handling\, Inc”). The Town of Westford receives no proceeds from this event. \nFor traffic safety reasons\, entry to the access road off North Street will not be allowed until 8:45 AM.
