SUMMARY:Westford’s First Juneteenth Flag Raising Event & Celebration
DESCRIPTION:The Westford Diversity\, Equity & Inclusion Committee invites everyone to Westford’s First Juneteenth Flag Raising & Celebration. Starting at 9:00 am on Wed\, June 19 on Westford Town Common it will be a morning of community celebration and reflection with the goal of raising awareness of Juneteenth and Westford’s history of slavery. As we hoist the traditional Juneteenth flag\, we will be joined by speakers from the community to help us mark Westford’s first formal Juneteenth celebration. It is an opportunity for town leadership to recognize this important holiday and its deeper meaning in American history – history that wasn’t taught to us in schools and may still be a bit lacking. Our awareness today allows us to learn more about ourselves and our own combined history of the U.S. This event marks an important statement about our town’s ongoing commitment to racial equity. \nImmediately after the flag raising – approximately 9:30am – we will head over to the Westford Museum where we will be treated to a spoken historical account of slavery in Westford from Westford Historian Leslie Howard and acknowledgement of a Westford-born\, revolution-area black soldier. These historical accounts will add context and richness of this special inaugural celebration Juneteenth in Westford. Even though Westford was in the Union state of Massachusetts\, it was not exempt from slavery. Leslie Howard has done extensive research on the history of slavery in Westford and will share a portion of that information and allow us to envision the slaves as real people who labored on this land where we now reside. \nFor more info or to register\, visit: https://bit.ly/WestfordJuneteenth2024

SUMMARY:Westford 250 – The Solemn League and Covenant and Westford’s Response to the 1774 Intolerable Acts
DESCRIPTION:In the spring and summer of 1774\, news had reached Boston that Britain’s Parliament had invoked several measures in retaliation for the Destruction of the Tea in Boston Harbor\, known as the “Intolerable Acts”. Samuel Adams and the Boston committee of correspondence developed a non-importation pledge known as the “Solemn League and Covenant”. The Covenant called for its signers to halt the purchase of British goods after August 31st. Westford was one of a small number of towns that supported the pledge. \nJoin Dan Lacroix as he looks at the history behind the document\, Westford’s original copy\, and the wide range of men who signed their names to the pledge and how they set Westford apart from other Massachusetts towns. \nDan Lacroix is a student of Westford’s 18th century history and webmaster of “westford1775.org“\, a resource for Westford’s Revolutionary period history. \nWhat is Westford 250? In 2025 the nation will commemorate the 250th anniversary of the start of the Revolutionary War. Join the Westford Museum and Historical Society as we explore Westford’s history in the American Revolution and related stories. \nSuggested Program Donation $10 per person

SUMMARY:Self-Preservation in Relationships - LGBTQ+ and allies support group
DESCRIPTION:CONTINUING THIS WEEK: A quick reminder that our FREE Survival Series group continues this Thursday at 7pm Roudenbush – Self-Preservation in Relationships. Sign up at:\nhttps://bit.ly/WestfordLGBTQSupport \nAug 1 we focus on Self-Preservation in Relationships. There are many techniques folks can utilize to meaningfully look at their current relationships from a new perspective. Once we have a new perspective\, we can build upon that to strategize setting healthy new boundaries for those relationships. We will also take a look at conflict in relationships and work with an imagery tactic where the relationship problem is like a wall in front of you and you and the other person are on the same side of that wall working on the problem side by side. \nCoping strategies and plans for self-care are also key to building healthy patterns that are a new framework upon which you can build. During this session we will walk through these techniques to see how they be used to help you and your loved ones cope. \nDuring these sessions\, it will be our intention to allow folks to express feelings around election concerns but to avoid getting involved in discussions on details regarding election topics as they are triggering for many. We will talk about practical and actionable strategies for self-care and self-preservation. \nOpen to folks high school and older who are LGBTQ+ or allies in Westford & surrounding towns.
