Vendors will come from far and wide for the opening day of the 2014 Westford Farmers’ Market on Tuesday, but one winemaker won’t have to travel much farther than across Minot’s Corner.

A micro-winery on Carlisle Road, Aaronap Cellars will bring its wares at the market, featuring four wines made out of Massachusetts grapes and a unique dessert wine developed from Berkshire maple syrup.

Aaronap owner and winemaker Noel Powell was once a drug discovery chemist, but also made award-winning homemade wine and studied oenology, the science of wine, getting a degree in it from the University of Calfornia at Davis.

Created as a play on words using his middle name and initials, Powell began the process of establishing Aaronap as a licensed winery in 2011 and today he hopes to bring his love of winemaking and his understanding of the science behind it to new local customers.

“My winemaking is a combination of my interests in art, history, and science,” he says. “Making good wine starts with sourcing the best grapes possible, but also requires the winemaker to make appropriate decisions in the winery to help shape the wine to its highest potential. Each of my wines is a reflection of both the grapes and my vision.”

In addition to the market, Powell says his business will travel to other festivals throughout the summer and can produce customized wines due to the small scale hand-crafting of his vintages, which are usually less than eighty gallons each.
