Nashoba Bantam AAA

Nashoba Grizzlies Bantam AAA soundly defeat Twin City 6-1

The grizzlies put forth arguably their most complete 36 minutes of two-way hockey so far this young preseason. Victorious, the win will most likely leap frog Nashoba over Twin City in the current Valley league standings and into second place.

It was a strong performance by the team as a whole while being down two players for the game, including top defenseman Chance Bichao who be out till January with a broken collarbone. The shorthanded defensive unit was propped up by Jeff Brake moving back from wing and playing as if he had played there from the start of the season. Strong overall team defense bolstered by continued improved play of the other defenseman, Joe Cornetta, Brian Ellis, and Matt Gould slowed Twin City’s offensive attack. Limiting prime scoring opportunities for the opposition is a good recipe for success when you can play in front of the consistent and fundamentally sound goal tending of Ben Canfield who turned away another 22 shots and only allowed 3 goals in the last three games.

Scoring was led by Nashoba’s top and smallest line who continue to show good skills and heads up play. A hat trick By Max Strong, two more goals added by Nolan Ratte, and strong supporting play by Liam Fisher who also added an assist of his own. Not to be outdone in providing the firepower was the 2nd line of Timmy Kelleher and Sean Mizzoni who both kick in two assists of their own. Line-mate Dan Cornetta also chipped in and scored a beautiful shorthanded goal in the second period. After stealing the puck, Dan turned on the jets and made a fantastic move around a Twin City defenseman, drove to the net and took a perfect short-side shot putting it past the goal tender and giving Nashoba a 5-1 lead at the time.

Taking on the very important role of floater, the extra forward playing multiple positions along the offensive front, was Ryan O’regan. Ryan handled the responsibilities superbly, staying focus and hardworking throughout the game while constantly changing roles.

It was another good small step in the right direction for the team. That momentum will need to be continued forward to the next game which will be the Bantam AAA’s biggest challenge facing off against undefeated Acton Boxboro.
