Most of the 9,885 National Grid customers in Westford remain without power, this afternoon, March 8.
As of 3:30 p.m. 8,606 customers are waiting for the electricity to be restored, according to the National Grid website.
The town is among dozens of Middlesex County communities that were smacked by a nor’easter last night that dumped more than a foot of heavy, wet snow on the region, taking down tree limbs and power lines.
A total of 87,201 in Middlesex County are without power — a number dwarfed by Essex County which has 104,389 National Grid customers without power on March 8.
Earlier this morning, Westford officials opened a warming center at the Cameron Senior Center on Pleasant Street, and announced they would determine whether to convert it into an overnight shelter later today.
Temperatures remained above freezing for the duration of the day, melting the snow. But they were expected to dip below 30 degrees overnight.
Facebook posters report that all of Cornerstone Square at Boston and Littleton Roads, including the Market Basket grocery store, are open, as is the Westford Valley Marketplace shopping center just down the road.
But traffic signals are dark and it’s not clear whether downed trees and limbs have been cleared away.
This morning, Town Manager Jodi Ross encouraged residents to stay home, noting that public safety officials had to rescue someone from under a downed tree. Wires were down all over town, she said, and a police cruiser was crushed by a fallen branch.
“Stay safe,” she said.
