WestfordCAT volunteer Cheryl A. Major’s “Thin, Strong, Healthy” video was honored this month with a first prize award from the Alliance for Community Media Northeast Region.
The award was recognized in the category of Science, Health and Spirituality for her show entitled “Gluten…Evil or Not?” She shares it with Stephen Edwards who directed and edited the video, and Rob Frado who did the camera work.
In the half-hour presentation, Major discusses how gluten, a protein found in wheat that is potentially linked to Alzheimer’s Disease.
Major takes viewers inside her Westford, Massachusetts kitchen to make a flatbread and then posts her recipe on her “Thin, Strong, Healthy” blog for a complete multimedia experience.

At age 28, Major discovered she was severely hypoglycemic so she adjusted and changed her diet.
This led her to remove all processed foods, gluten and preservatives from her diet. An unexpected result of these changes was a significant drop in weight, she said, as well as a release from a long struggle with depression.
Major is writing a book about her escape from anti-depressants using food as her medicine. The working title is “Eat Your Blues Away”.
