Serena Beri, a sophomore at the University of Connecticut, announces her upcoming new 10-part television series called “For Girls in STEM, By Girls in STEM,” to encourage young women to join the STEM field. Beri said she initially got involved in robotics during high school as a member of the regional StormGears Team, but disliked it. She said she lacked confidence, knowing nothing about programming, machining or electrical wiring. But instead of dropping out, she decided to take on a leadership role and became a safety co-chairman of her team winning an award from inventor Dean Kamen’s FIRST program. FIRST stands for For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology.

“Robotics is an option for everyone and for every girl. It’s inclusive and it’s a fine way to maybe find a passion that you hadn’t thought about before and also have a say in the future about all the innovations coming through the STEM field,” said Beri.

Beri said she hopes to record the shows this summer.
