Longtime Westford Police K-9 passes away

WESTFORD — At 13 years old and after nine years of service, Beny, Westford Police Department’s K-9 has passed away.

Beny, an imported German Shepherd, served the department from 2011 to 2020. He was an “invaluable partner” to K-9 Officer Corey Peladeau.

“Many times they were called by other departments when they needed the assistance of a K-9,” the department wrote on social media.

According to the department, Beny was responsible for locating firearms and missing persons. He also assisted in the response to the 2013 Boston Marathon bombing.

“Beny was a great police dog and in his role with NEMLEC SWAT protected many police officers and assisted numerous police agencies throughout the Commonwealth,” wrote the department. “He will be missed by many.”

Beny was treated at Littleton Animal Hospital before his passing. A send-off was held at the Westford Police Department earlier this morning.
