Director’s Corner: Our Youth Services staff have out done themselves and transformed the Library into a Halloween Haven.  Children will delight in a “silly spooky walk” which is sure to cast a spell and end with a special (non-food) treat.  Read below for all of the details and thank the Friends of the Library for funding this frightfully fun time!

Friends’ Annual Meeting and Featured Speaker-Marcella Pixley: Thursday, November 2 at 7:00 p.m. Ms. Pixley will discuss her latest book, Trowbridge Road. This young adult novel was a Junior Library Guild Gold Standard Selection and was longlisted for the 2020 National Book award and the Massachusetts Book Award. It was also named a best book of 2020 by Shelf Awareness, Reading Group Choices, and Mighty Girls, and was nominated for a Golden Dome Award. A Westford resident, Ms. Pixley teaches eighth grade Language Arts in the Carlisle Public Schools. Marcella Pixley’s talk, starting at 7:30, is free and open to all. There will be a short business meeting preceding the program.  No registration required.

Outdoor Spooky Walk – Now through Halloween! During our open hours and any time after dark (weather permitting, this is New England after all), follow our spooky library walk which will lead you out the back door, around the side of the building, and back up the front stairs. Start off from the children’s room where you will get an answer sheet to complete the rhymes on the numbered signs, a pencil, and a flashlight for navigating the walk. When you are done, come back to the children’s room for a Halloween treat.

Adult Nonfiction Book Club: Tuesday, November 7 at 7:00 p.m. – We’ll meet in the downstairs Meeting Room to discuss Ike’s Bluff: President Eisenhower’s Secret Battle to Save the World by Evan Thomas.  Copies are available at Main Desk. Email Charles Schweppe at cschweppe@westfordma.gov for details!

Staff Recommends: This is the perfect time of year to read the Hour of the Witch by Chris Bohjalian. “Boston, 1662. Mary Deerfield is twenty-four-years-old. Her skin is porcelain, her eyes delft blue, and in England she might have had many suitors. But here in The New World, amid this community of saints, Mary is the second wife of Thomas Deerfield, a man as cruel as he is powerful. When Thomas, prone to drunken rage, drives a three-tined fork into the back of Mary’s hand, she resolves that she must divorce him to save her life. But in a world where every neighbor is watching for signs of the devil, Mary soon finds herself the object of suspicion and rumor. When tainted objects are discovered buried in Mary’s garden, when a boy she has treated with herbs and simples dies, and when their servant girl runs screaming in fright from her home, Mary must fight not only to escape her marriage, but also the gallows.”
