WESTFORD — Westford Academy Girls’ and Boys’ Hockey will play two fundraiser games for Live for Liv later this month.
The teams assembled for a luncheon on Jan. 25, where Live for Liv founder Jody Marchand gave a speech on her organization, which was founded to promote education and support those affected by domestic violence.
“Domestic violence could be happening in any partnership,” Marchand said. “It’s like a pie – and there are slices of that pie – what happened to me may not be what’s happening to someone else.”
Marchand also encouraged students to volunteer or intern for Live for Liv in the spring for their capstone project.
The foundation hosts Ride for Liv and Run for Liv, and Marchand said students willing to publicize the event and design social media posts, logos, and shirt designs would be a welcome addition to the team.
“Eventually, we would like to have a house, named Liv’s Independence House for someone who needs a space temporarily to live. A place [to live] while they’re waiting for a divorce, or being trained for a job because they’ve never been allowed to work,” Marchand said.
The funds raised by WA Hockey, as well as the Ride/Run donations each year, will be used to support survivors in need.
The initiative to support Live for Liv is new for WA Hockey, whose only fundraiser game used to be the annual Pink the Rink to raise funds for breast cancer research. Despite the change, players’ passion remains strong.
“As captains […] we want to make sure that everyone knows how important this is,” senior Emily Lux said.
The Girls’ Hockey game will be held at Nashoba Valley Olympia Rink in Boxborough on Jan. 27 at 3 p.m. The Boys’ Hockey game will be held at Skate 3 Hockey Arena in Tyngsboro on Jan. 31 at 7:45 p.m. Click here for more information about Live for Liv.
