Respectfully submitted by: James Antonelli, Former Principal, Westford Academy
I would like to take a moment to thank former Westford Public Schools Superintendent, Everett V. (Bill) Olsen.
Recently, Westford CAT aired an episode of Westford Tales, hosted by former State Representative and Westford Academy Trustee Geoff Hall. During the program, Geoff interviewed me, James Antonelli, former Westford Academy Principal and long-time Westford resident about growing up in the Parker Village area of Westford, Massachusetts.
I thoroughly enjoyed the interview with Mr. Hall, and we covered a great deal of ground, including the history of my family: where my parents came from and where they first lived in Westford. As we spoke, I mentioned many people who influenced my life, from my days as a student-athlete at Westford Academy to my years as a coach, teacher, and school administrator. Among those I mentioned were former Principal Joseph Lisi, former Superintendent of Schools John Crisafulli, and former coach and teacher Bill Cody, to name just a few.
While reviewing the final cut of the show, I was pleased with the many names I had the opportunity to share with Mr. Hall. However, upon reflection, I realized I had left out one individual who had an enormous impact on my life and career. With that said, I want to express my deep gratitude to former Superintendent Everett V. (Bill) Olsen.
I first met Bill in 1994 when he was serving as the Business Manager for the Westford Public Schools. From the beginning, we developed a strong professional relationship, which grew even closer when I moved into administration. I had tremendous respect for Bill as a school leader and greatly appreciated his mentorship.
In the winter of 2006–2007, Bill informed me that then, Principal of Westford Academy, Ellen Parker, would be announcing her retirement. He shared with me that he intended to appoint me as the next principal of Westford Academy. He explained that he would not be conducting a formal screening process and that, after informing the School Committee, he would officially name me principal.
This was an incredible and humbling opportunity for me. I remain forever grateful to Superintendent Olsen for believing in me and appointing me to that role without the need for a lengthy interview process.
Bill and I worked together in our respective leadership roles for the next 14 years. I feel truly honored and blessed to have served in such an incredible school in such a supportive and vibrant town.
Thank you, Superintendent Olsen, for your 36 years of dedicated service to the Town of Westford and for believing in me. It was the opportunity of a lifetime to become the only Westford Academy graduate to serve as principal of Westford Academy.
