News from the J.V. Fletcher – 515 Groton Rd. (temporary location), Westford, 978-399-2300.

Unless otherwise noted, the following programs are made possible by the Friends of the Library.

Director’s Corner: Recently, Andrea Bono-Bunker, Library Building Consultant from the Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners, conducted a site visit of the Library’s building project at 50 Main Street, which is being partially funded under the Massachusetts Public Library Construction Program (MPLCP).  The Library project will receive a total of $8,681,257 in grant funding from the Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners. Ms. Bono-Bunker praised the progress of the project as well as the Library’s temporary location. She remarked that most libraries undergoing similar projects are not able to have connecting multiple service suites or have on-site access to their entire circulating collection at their temporary site.

Holiday Closing: In observance of Veterans Day, the Library will be closed on Tuesday, November 11, 2025. The Library will re-open on Wednesday, November 12, at 10:00 a.m.

VIRTUAL: The History of the Flying Santa of the Lighthouses, 1929-2025, with Jeremy D’Entremont, November 3, 7:00-8:00 p.m. The aerial visits of the Flying Santa to lighthouses and lifesaving stations have been a New England tradition since 1929. The program was inaugurated by Bill Wincapaw, a pioneering Maine pilot. Edward Rowe Snow, the popular New England historian and storyteller, became involved in the 1930s and kept the flights going through 1980. Today, the nonprofit organization Friends of Flying Santa works to continue the flights as a gesture of gratitude to the men, women, and families of the Coast Guard who keep watch over our coastal waters. Thousands of hours are volunteered each year to ensure the success of the helicopter flights that include the children of Coast Guard families from Maine to New York. Register Here.

Staff Recommends: Heart the Lover, by Lily King. “You knew I’d write a book about you someday.” Our narrator understands good love stories-their secrets and subtext, their highs and their free falls. But her greatest love story, the one she lived, never followed the simple rules. In the fall of her senior year of college, she meets two star students from her 17th-Century Lit class: Sam and Yash. Best friends living off campus in the elegant house of a professor on sabbatical, the boys invite her into their intoxicating world of academic fervor, rapid-fire banter, and raucous card games. They nickname her Jordan, and she quickly discovers the pleasures of friendship, love, and her own intellectual ambition. Youthful passion is unpredictable, though, and she soon finds herself at the center of a charged and intricate triangle. As graduation comes and goes, the choices made will alter these three lives forever. Decades later, Jordan is living the life she dreamed of, and the vulnerable days of her youth seem comfortably behind her. But when a surprise visit and unexpected news bring the past crashing into the present, she returns to a world she left behind and is forced to confront the decisions and deceptions of her younger self.”
