WESTFORD — Strong winds took down trees and caused power outages in Westford on Tuesday, with a wind advisory issued until early Wednesday morning.

Multiple homes lost power in Nabnasset, after a large tree fell across Plain Road, taking with it adjacent power lines.

Emergency calls about the downed tree first came in around noon.

As a result of the fallen tree, the Westford Police Department closed Plain Road between Oak Hill Road and Williams Avenue. Officers blocked the road and redirected traffic to Hawthorne Avenue.

Police said no one was hurt, but warned residents to stay away from the power lines as the wires were still active.

The Westford Public Works Department, National Grid and Comcast were also at the scene, to remove the tree and repair the power and telephone lines.

Residents of the surrounding homes told WestfordCAT they lost power and could smell burning wires inside their home.

This comes as strong winds move through the area, bringing with them frigid temperatures in the 20s, with the wind chill making it feel like single digits.

The National Weather Service in Boston/Norton issued a wind advisory until 1 a.m. Wednesday, as wind gusts were reported to get up to 50 mph in some areas.

By Tuesday evening, the tree had been cleared, the road was reopened and the power was restored to the area.
