WESTFORD — Hildreth Street was closed off on Friday morning following a water main break near Wright Lane.

Around 8 a.m. Friday, the Westford Public Works Department issued a statement about the broken water main, announcing that Hildreth Street between Boston Road and Parkhurst Drive was closed and will remain so for several hours, so that crews can stop the leak and make emergency repairs.

Residents on Hildreth Street from Boston Road to Wright Lane, as well as residents on Wright Lane, Dove Lane, Priscilla Lane and Pageant Way will be without water while the repairs take place, the statement said.

The Westford Police Department stationed officers at both ends of the closure, in order to redirect traffic around the leak. The police also issued a statement urging drivers to seek alternate routes.

According to Public Works, residents may also notice low water pressure or discolored water in nearby areas, as a result of sediment being stirred up by the leak.

Once the repairs are completed, an update will be available on the Westford Water Department’s website, the Public Works statement said.

Public Works also urged residents to not use water, especially hot water, while the repair work is still in progress, due to the risk of residents’ drawing more sediment into their plumbing.

Once repairs are completed, residents should run a cold tap for several minutes until the water runs clear.

If discoloration continues, residents are urged to call the the Water Department at 978-692-5529.

It is not yet clear what caused the water main to break, but the extreme cold temperatures in Westford this week are a possible factor.
