WESTFORD — The National Weather Service in Boston/Norton has issued a winter storm watch for Middlesex County, including Westford.

The winter storm watch is effective from 7 a.m. on Jan. 25 through 7 p.m. on Jan. 26.

Forecasters say heavy snow is possible, with projected accumulations ranging from 12 to 24 inches.

The town encourages residents to closely monitor local weather forecasts and official alerts as the storm approaches and as conditions and expected impacts may change.

Westford Emergency Management is sharing winter storm safety guidance from the Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency  to help residents prepare and stay safe.

Winter storm safety tips include stocking up on groceries, medications, and other essential supplies ahead of the storm and preparing for potential power outages by having flashlights, extra batteries, and a battery-powered radio on hand. Residents are also encouraged to charge phones, tablets, and backup battery packs fully.

Residents are urged to dress warmly, limit time outdoors, and bring pets inside during severe weather. Space heaters should be kept away from flammable materials, and generators, grills, or outdoor heating equipment should never be used indoors due to the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning.

Travel should be avoided during the storm whenever possible. Those who must drive are advised to slow down, leave extra following distance, and carry an emergency kit in their vehicle.

Snow removal can be physically demanding, officials warn. Residents are encouraged to take breaks while shoveling, lift with their legs, and avoid overexertion, particularly older adults or those with underlying health conditions.

The town encourages residents to take precautions now and plan for possible storm impacts.

Westford’s J.V. Fletcher Library, at 515 Groton Rd, will serve as a warming center on Jan. 24, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., town officials said.
