WASHINGTON D.C. — U.S. Rep. Lori Trahan, who represents Westford, announced she will not attend President Donald Trump’s State of the Union on Tuesday.
In a statement posted by Trahan on social media Tuesday afternoon, the representative said although she “respects the tradition of the State of the Union and the Office of the President”, she will not be attending the address given by what she called “a president whose policies have pushed the American Dream further out of reach for so many.”
“Families across our country are facing higher prices at the grocery store, on their utility bills, and at the pharmacy,” Trahan’s statement said. “The last thing they want to hear is more empty promises from a president who has spent the past year enriching himself and his billionaire donors while hardworking Americans struggle to make ends meet.”
In her statement, Trahan also added that she believes other representatives and senators would make better use of their time not attending the address and continuing to work on passing legislation.
“I believe senators and representatives’ time would be better spent working on real solutions,” the statement said. “Passing legislation to bring down costs, placing sensible guardrails on Kristi Noem’s rogue ICE agents, and making sure families can see a doctor if they get sick or injured. The American people deserve real action, not hollow applause.”
