WESTFORD — The Westford Water Department responded to a water main break on Old Homestead Road near Long Meadow Road, causing temporary water service disruptions for nearby residents.
Some households in the affected area will lose water service while emergency repairs are underway, according to a town news release. The repairs could take several hours to fix the leaking water main.
During repairs, other residents may also experience low water pressure or discolored water caused by naturally occurring sediments stirred up within the water main.
The Water Department will post updates on its website once repair work is completed.
Residents experiencing discolored water are advised to first confirm that repairs have been finished by checking the Water Department’s website. If work is still ongoing, officials recommend avoiding water use, as doing so may draw more discolored water into home plumbing systems. Residents are encouraged to avoid using hot water in particular, as sediment can enter hot water heaters.
After repairs are completed, residents who continue to see discolored water are encouraged run a cold water in a bathtub. Flushing typically clears the water within a few minutes, but may take up to 15 to 20 minutes in some cases.
