WESTFORD — A person was hospitalized following a two-car crash on a busy Westford roadway Tuesday afternoon, which badly damaged two vehicles and a utility pole.
Westford police and firefighters responded to the crash around 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, which occurred on Groton Road (Route 40) between Dunstable Road and Nutting Road.
According to Westford public safety dispatchers, one person was injured in the crash and taken to a nearby hospital. Their condition is currently unknown.
WestfordCAT was at the scene of the crash and saw a badly damaged Toyota sedan, as well as a Chevrolet pickup truck that had crashed into a utility pole. EMS were also at the scene along with police and firefighters. Westford Public Works and National Grid were also at the scene to repair the damaged utility pole.
Witnesses at the scene said it appeared that the drivers of both vehicles may have swerved out of the way to avoid a head on crash, with the pickup truck crashing into the utility pole. One nearby resident said crashes are common on Groton Road, as there have been many instances of drivers speeding.
Both lanes of traffic on Groton Road were blocked off by police, cutting off one of Westford’s busiest roadways during the start of the Tuesday evening commute. Police were redirecting traffic around the crash and advised all drivers follow detours, use caution, reduce speed and seek alternate routes to avoid excessive traffic.
Police said Groton Road was later reopened around 5 p.m. to alternating, one-way traffic while National Grid makes repairs to the damaged utility pole.
The cause of the crash is unclear and remains under investigation by police.
