Bruce Springsteen fell in love with a pink cadillac, but here in Westford, residents are mystified by a pink 2012 Dodge Charger that belongs to the Westford Police Department.
October is breast cancer awareness month. This year Westford police decided to make a bold statement in support of the effort. The Dodge was brought to Colonial Municipal Group of Acton where graphics designer Bill Camillucci wrapped it in a special pink vinyl.
“I think it’s a great opportunity to get the conversation started,” said Sgt. Brandon Holmes. “One more reason to talk with the community and engage with the community.”
Holmes stressed that no taxpayer money went into the project. The police association is covering the $700 cost of materials and Camillucci donated his time.
“It’s an inexpensive way to change the car,” Camillucci noted.
And change it did.
The color has helped Holmes engage positively with people in town.
“Personally I think it’s a great conversation starter,” he said. “There’s many people in our community that are affected in different ways (by) cancer. It’s certainly a tragedy. So I think it’s a great opportunity to get the conversation started, and if anything, one more reason to talk to the community and engage with the community.”
The Westford Police Department has quietly reached out many times before, according to Holmes.
“We like to look for new opportunities to raise awareness around different charities,” he said. The public safety officers have given to the Jimmy Fund, Special Olympics, the Westford Food Pantry and sports charities.
The department is selling patches with pink trim and pink letters for $10 each during the hours of 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. inside the police station.
All proceeds will go to the Virginia Thurston Healing Garden in Harvard, Holmes said.
