WESTFORD – The 23rd anniversary of the Sept. 11 terror attacks was observed on Wednesday morning.
Town officials, first responders and residents gathered at the 9/11 memorial to speak at the tribute including Representative James Arciero.
“That dark day, when nearly 3,000 Americans would perish in unthinkable ways, when buildings we thought would last forever would fall on ours; when the center of our military might would be struck, and when everyday passengers on an airplane would become American heroes,” Arciero said.
Those gathered remembered the two Westford residents, Susan Mackay, 44, and James Hayden, 47, who were lost in the attacks 23 years ago.
Mackay was aboard American Airlines Flight 11 when it crashed into the north tower of the World Trade Center. Hayden was on United Airlines Flight 175, which crashed into the south tower of the World Trade Center.
“The events of 9/11 shook our nation to the core, it tested our resolve, but it also revealed resilience. In the aftermath of that tragic day, we saw a strike through the American spirit and the communities across the country that came together to support one another,” Select Board vice chair Thomas Clay said.
The National Day of Service and Remembrance was held at 10 a.m. next to Town Hall.
