The 2025 growing season was a banner one for the Westford Community Gardens (WCG), A recent end-of-season survey confirms what many gardeners already knew: this vibrant garden is flourishing as both a productive growing space and a valued community hub.
From May through October, the Westford Community Gardens hosted over 140 plots and welcomed more than 230 gardeners who grew vegetables, fruit, herbs, and flowers throughout the season. At the close of the year, coordinators invited plot owners to share their experiences and ideas for the future. Survey results indicate overwhelmingly positive feedback for the Westford Community with 100% of member respondents rating their experience as Excellent or Good.
Why Gardening Matters
When asked why gardening appeals to them in general, respondents overwhelmingly cited mental and physical wellbeing as their top motivation. Fresh air, physical activity, and the calming rhythm of gardening were seen as powerful benefits. Close behind were reasons many gardeners share: having control over the quality of their food, connecting with nature, and cultivating a fulfilling new hobby.
Why Garden at Westford Community Gardens?
Interestingly, the survey revealed that most WCG members already have yards at home. Rather than lack of space, gardeners choose Westford Community Gardens because of what it offers beyond a typical backyard.
Members highlighted the garden’s fertile soil, reliable water access, deer and rodent fencing, and abundant sunlight as major advantages. Just as important was the sense of community—the opportunity to garden alongside others, share knowledge, and enjoy a peaceful escape from daily stress. For many, WCG is not just a place to grow food, but to recharge.
Looking Ahead: Growth, Giving, and Community Impact
The future looks bright. Most respondents indicated a strong intention to return for the 2026 season, reflecting high retention and continued enthusiasm.
Gardeners also shared ideas for future improvements, helping guide priorities for the coming year. The top three initiatives members would like to see include:
- Raised garden beds
- Dedicated food donation plots
- Shelter to provide better protection from the elements
Garden coordinators are already turning feedback into action. Following the survey, the Garden Committee meeting unanimously approved a proposal to reserve two plots exclusively for growing food for donation for the upcoming season. These plots will be managed by experienced garden members, with support from the Gleaning Team to harvest and transport fresh produce to local pantries.
A Garden That Grows More Than Food
With strong participation, glowing feedback, and new initiatives focused on giving back, the Westford Community Gardens continues to thrive as a cornerstone of the community. As planning begins for the 2026 season, WCG remains committed to nurturing not only healthy crops, but also connection, wellbeing, and generosity.
Whether you’re an experienced gardener or simply looking for a place to grow, learn, and belong, the Westford Community Gardens stands as a shining example of what can happen when community and cultivation come together.
2026 WCG Season Registration
Westford residents may apply for plots when applications become available and are due by March 15. Residents are encouraged to register to receive notification when applications are open.
