WESTFORD CENTER — Water Department officials are reminding residents that Stage II mandatory outdoor water use restrictions remain in effect as warmer weather and drought conditions increase demand on the town’s water system.
According to the department’s news release, rising temperatures are expected to lead to increased irrigation and other non-essential outdoor water use. The reminder also comes as the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection has declared a Level 2 — Significant Drought for the area.
The release stated that the town’s water system can reliably meet customer demand during most of the year, but challenges arise during the summer months when outdoor water use significantly increases.
The department said that following Stage II restrictions could help reduce peak demand and avoid the need for a complete ban on non-essential outdoor water use. Maintaining adequate water supply for residential and business needs, as well as fire protection, remains a priority.
The Water Department has begun conducting daytime and after-hours patrols to ensure compliance with the restrictions. Violations are subject to fines of $50 for a first offense and $100 for subsequent violations.
