Local book lovers will have to wait until March 2027 for the J.V. Fletcher Library’s doors to officially re-open, according to the Joint J.V. Fletcher Library Board of Trustees and Permanent Town Building Committee (PTBC) monthly construction report.

The joint committee met on Monday, August 11 to discuss construction progress during the month of July and to vote on new procedures to take place this August.

The opening date has been pushed from November due to scheduling delays with the Library’s contractor, Hutter Construction Corporation. However, according to last month’s report summary, “July saw a substantial increase in project activity.” Specifically, construction focused on interior structuring, roofing installation, and window testing.

Jennifer McGory of CHA Solutions, the town’s representative on site, presented the data to the joint board, as well as three notable updates regarding interior design changes and unforeseen conditions to the outside.

A replacement of a discontinued tile used for the flooring of the Library’s family restroom and the discovery of asbestos in the Library’s foundation are both under review. The joint committee then voted in favor of restoring a historic chimney on the roof of the library, but will take action on the former two changes at a later date.

Other interior renovations included:

  • Updated lighting and power maintenance
  • Interior wall layout & installation work
  • Roof drainage pipe installations
  • Plumbing pipe work
  • Stairwell installation and concrete pour work

Other exterior renovations included:

  • Copper flashing, gutter, and snowguard installations
  • Metal window installations
  • Brick cleaning
  • Safety railing installations & maintenance
  • Temporary window and door maintenance

This August, construction will continue to focus on interior wall layout and installations, as well as roof slate and metal window installations.

The joint committee will report its next quarterly updates to the Select Board on Tuesday, Sept. 8.
