Since their foundation, Westford Academy and the Robinson and Crisafulli schools have been connected by forest trails. One bridge near Westford Academy, dubbed the Academy Bridge, is the longest trail bridge in town and has allowed neighborhood children to get to and from WA safely for years.
However, it is now falling apart due to age and rotting wood. In fact, a 24-foot section is literally falling into the water below, and the railings are in need of replacement.
Thankfully, Westford Academy student Erin Gardner has decided to raise money to restore the historic bridge. She created a campaign on GoFundMe with the goal of raising $2.2k. At the time of reporting, she has raised $1,125 and counting.
“Restoring this bridge will allow the Westford community to continue having a safe direct passage between schools and sports fields,” Garder said. “Additionally, this project will help me achieve the rank of Eagle in the scouting program. I would really appreciate any donation to help my cause!”
With this money, Gardner will replace the 24-foot section of the bridge that has partially fallen into the water and all railings alongside the bridge. With these restorations, the bridge will be able to function for years to come.
Gardner is also a member of the WA Cirrus club, which aims to bring students outdoors and form connections. Some previous activities that Cirrus has done include the overnight hike challenge and hiking local mountains, such as Mount Monadnock, according to the Westford Academy Ghostwriter.
“You’re just there in the forest, letting go of all your worries and just being in the moment,” Gardner said. “It is also a way to have fun with your friends, whether it’s rock climbing or hiking or just playing hangman with the group.”
“I’ve known Erin since she joined Club Scouts in elementary school,” said Westford resident Barbara Evangelista on her Facebook page. “[I’m] so happy to see her amazing Scout journey, including serving as Senior Patrol Leader, a 12-day Philmont trek, and working at Camp Wanocksett all summer.”
