Westford Community Access Television walked away with the “Coveted Roudenbowl” for best float in the Apple Blossom Parade on May 13.
The awarding of the Roudenbowl is an annual tradition by the Westford Kiwanis members. The civic club sponsors the five-day Apple Blossom Festival which launches and ends with a carnival. The highlight of the festival takes place on a Saturday with a parade and ceremony. In previous years the award has gone to the J.V. Fletcher Library staff, and once it even went to the Westford Kiwanis.
The award was presented inside the Abbot School gym immediately after the parade.
“After participating in the apple blossom parade for more than eight years, it’s an extreme honor to be awarded the coveted Roudenbowl for best float,” said WestfordCAT Board President Ira Keltz. “The impetus for having our first real float came directly from our marketing outreach manager, Sarah Fletcher, who working with our interns and staff came up with a super creative concept that made people smile.”
The local access station’s float consisted of two television cameras with operators and a large monitor mounted on the back of an over-sized trailer. A generator powered the whole operation allowing the camera crew to project images of the spectators onto the monitor so the crowd members could see themselves as the float went by.
Mary Yao who presented the award and led the judging could not be immediately reached for comment.
Keltz, Fletcher and Executive Director Lauren Horton accepted the award, crediting several Westford Academy senior interns for their help and input. The seniors are completing capstone projects at WestfordCAT this week.
