Friends of the J.V. Fletcher Library Annual Meeting with Featured Speaker Marianne Leone: Thursday, Nov. 7 at 7 p.m. This year’s featured speaker is Marianne Leone, who will begin speaking at 7:30 p.m. This event is free and open to the public, although only Friends members can vote during the Annual Meeting. Marianne Leone is an actress, screenwriter, essayist, and author. Her unforgettable memoir of joy, grief, and triumph, Jesse, tells the story of her son’s life and chronicles her transformation by his remarkable life and untimely death. Her second memoir, Ma Speaks Up, recounts the story of her outspoken, frequently outrageous Italian immigrant mother. Her essays and op-ed pieces have appeared in the Boston Globe, WBUR’s Cognoscenti blog, and The Bark magazine. She had a recurring role on HBO’s hit series “The Sopranos” as Joanne Moltisanti, Christopher’s mother, and has appeared in films by John Sayles, David O. Russell, Nancy Savoca, and Martin Scorsese. Halloween Library Style! Thursday, Oct. 24 from 4 to 5 p.m. The Youth Services librarians have brewed up a variety of games, crafts, and of course, costumes. Halloween costumres are welcome. Tickets ($2) for kids and their caregivers are available in the Youth Services department. Best for school age kids but siblings can join in with their caregivers.
Being Mortal Book Discussion: Thursday, Oct. 24 at 7 p.m. Being Mortal by Dr. Atul Gawande, a sensitive, intelligent and heartfelt examination of the processes of aging and dying. Social worker Kathy Benson and clinical nurse Joanne McCole will lead the discussion as they examine Gawande’s question, “We all die, so why don’t we die well?” This program highlights portions of the relevant Frontline episode to introduce the book, so attendees are not required to read it in advance. Monday Mystery Book Club: Monday, Oct. 28 at 10:30 a.m. The group meets on the fourth Monday morning of each month at 10:30 a.m. in the Mary Atwood Room. Our October selection is The Reckoning by John Grisham. Copies of the current selection are available for check-out at the Main Desk. New members are always welcome. No registration required. Imagine, create, and participate! Each Monday from 3:30 pm to 4:30 pm Teens and Tweens can participate in a variety of hands-on activities that include making fun, seasonal crafts and exploring STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics) activities. This is a FREE drop – in event for Teens and Tweens in Grades 5 to 12, registration is NOT required.
Ukulele Strum Along: Saturday, Oct. 26 from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. Learn to play by playing. Focusing on 2 and 3 chord songs, this program is for the beginner ukulele player who wants to practice and play music with others. Ukuleles available to borrow, and songs are projected onto a screen so no music stands or books necessary. This program is open to adults and teens. Residents can register here or in Information Services to borrow a ukulele, or they can bring their own.
Knitting Group: Monday, Oct. 28 at 6:30 p.m. Do you enjoy knitting? Our informal knitting group meets in the Mary Atwood Room on the second Monday of every month from 3:00 to 5 p.m. AND the fourth Monday of every month from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. This is a drop-in program that is open to all ages. Booktalk with Mayleen and Kristina: Friday, Nov. 1 at 1:30 p.m. Mayleen and Kristina will present an informal “Booktalk.” No registration required.
Annual Magazine Giveaway is now underway. Each fall the librarians discard the oldest year of magazines to make room for the incoming year. They are taking requests for all 2018 titles. Those who would like particular titles, are asked to contact Charles Schweppe. Residents can call Information Services at 978-399-2309 or email Schweppe at cschweppe@westfordma.gov. First come, first serve. Titles will be ready by the end of the year.
New England Aquarium Pass: The Oceans come to life through touch tanks and exhibits at the aquarium. The Friends funded pass admits up to 4 people at a discounted rate. Residents can check out the museum passes page on the website or call the Library for reservations.

Database of the Week: Access Newspaper Archive contains the full text of thousands of historical newspapers (including the Lowell Sun from 1879-2010 and the Boston Globe from 1784-1977) from Massachusetts, the United States, and some foreign countries.
