WESTFORD — Speed limit changes for Griffin Road and a section of Boston Road are now in effect.
The Select Board voted unanimously to reduce the speed limit on Griffin Road to 25 miles per hour and voted 4-1 to reduce the speed limit on a section of Boston Road to 25 miles per hour during a Dec. 12 meeting.
During a June 2022 Annual Town Meeting, a majority of voters opted to accept the provisions of Massachusetts General Law c. 90 Section 17C which allows the Select Board to establish reduced speed limits in thickly settled districts. Speed limits have already been established on Patten Road, a section of Main Street and sections of Pleasant Street and W. Prescott Street.
The change impacts a section of Boston Road between Main Street to about Crown Road, where the town has exclusive jurisdiction.
The remainder of the road is under the jurisdiction of the state until a planned reconstruction project is completed. The project is currently in its design phase and is not slated to begin until 2025.
The Department of Public Works installed new signage along both roads on Jan. 4.
