Meet Ella and Devereux. They are more than just a couple of adorable college sweethearts; they are the founders of Interlude Music. Interlude: A musical term defined as “a short, transitional musical passage that acts as a break or connection between two other sections or songs.” This is exactly why the couple decided to name their studio as such; they love to connect music with community.

Interlude Studios came to be when Ella and Devereux decided to tie the knot and their businesses. After meeting at Gordon College, where they were both studying music, they decided one day to work together to combine their love for each other and music.  Devereux is a talented pianist and music director, and Ella is a gifted theatrical director and the voice side of things. Interlude, which is out of Waltham, Massachusetts, is all about helping people embrace their musical talents. The couple does far more than help students sharpen their musical skills. This couple’s love for music and community runs quite deep. They explain that if there are elderly musicians who can no longer play due to illness or age, Devereux will go to their homes and perform a private concert so they can still feel the connection to music.

While speaking with both Ella and Devereux, they mentioned their curated season, which includes upcoming shows like a Rodgers and Hammerstein concert, a live scoring of Nosferatu, and the Christmas radio play. Ella described this season as “a little bit of a harkening back. We feel like something that people seem to be really craving and missing right now is experiences of collective joint attention.”

The couple makes a great point about why they put on these shows and the thought process behind the chosen music. “We don’t have a lot of things right now where we’re in a room together, just feeling things, listening to things, and putting our one hundred percent full attention on it,” states Ella. The selflessness of this couple shines when they talk about how they go about selecting the music that they like to perform. Ella states, “The first thing I ask myself as a director and a producer when I am creating a season is, ‘What do people need right now?’ We are looking for something that fills a specific need.”

It is nothing but obvious that this couple has nothing but heart and passion for music, and they are driven by making sure that people can enjoy music in its entirety. While explaining these musical choices, they note that in this day and age, we tend to hear music from a translated state called “The Great American Songbook.” Loosely translated, they described that “it’s taking all these songs for a musical theatre and popular culture, and we have performed them in every way humanly possible. They’ve been jazz, pop, and rock.” As cool as these adaptations are and as much as they are enjoyed, both Ella and Devereux have a passion to show the community the original score of the intended performance. Coming Sep 21, 2025, Ella and Devereux will be performing Some Enchanted Afternoon: The Music of Rodgers and Hammerstein, embracing the Golden Age musical theatre at the PCA center right here in Westford. This show is important not only because it is full of excitement for the couple, but it also has a very special dedication, which is to Ella’s grandmother, who has a great love for Golden Age musical theatre.

Ella’s maternal grandmother, while suffering from dementia, to this day does not forget music; she still knows the songs by heart. Ella shares a fond memory of her “every single week we get together in her kitchen and we sing through a whole album of one of the shows together. So this show is very much my love letter to her.” It’s important to highlight that music can do wonderful things not only for us as individuals but as a collective group. Music has this one-of-a-kind nature where it can be whatever you need it to be in any given moment to connect you to your mind and body, and that is exactly what this couple has depicted.

These upcoming shows seem like nothing short of perfection. I encourage you to grab your tickets and visit their website to see what Interlude can offer you! Both Ella and Devereux wanted to make a special thank you to Julieann Govang, who is such a great promoter of the Arts and has helped them make this connection to both the PCA Center and WestfordCAT.
